The Threat to Religious Liberty

For most of world history, in most nations, under most forms of government, both the idea and the practice of religious liberty were absent. You either got in line or you got killed. The United States was supposed to be different. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

The founders knew the history of government meddling in religious belief or practice. The First Amendment has ensured that Christians have been more or less free to believe, to worship, and to behave in accord with their Christian conscience. But that freedom is now under threat.

The 2016 Democratic Party Platform states:

"We support a progressive vision of religious freedom that respects pluralism and rejects the misuse of religion to discriminate." - 2016 Democratic Party Platform, page 19

I have no doubt that the Democratic party's "progressive vision of religious freedom" is actually a repressive vision aimed at controlling the practice of traditional, conservative, Christian faith. Biblically-based Christian belief and behavior will be labeled as discrimination, especially in the areas of marriage, sexuality, and gender identity. The First Amendment will no longer apply to Christians .

Pray that the Democratic Party never has the opportunity to implement its so called progressive vision of religious freedom. And after you have prayed, ask yourself this: why does a political party in the United States feel any need to publish a vision of religious anything? Maybe they should mind their own business. Do you want a political party telling you what to believe and how to follow Jesus? They do that in totalitarian states. Do not let them do that here.
