Rest In Jesus, But Stay Alert

Rest In Jesus, But Stay Alert.

We are made right with God by grace alone. It's a gift by which God clothes us with the righteousness of Jesus Christ. We were made acceptable to God even when we were totally unacceptable. That's our immediate and permanent standing before God and it never changes. The first verse of Romans chapter five sums it up:

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." - Romans 5:1-2 NIV

Therefore, rest. The work of justification is done, complete, finished in Christ. You and I will never be more or less justified than we are at this moment.

However, as you rest, stay alert. There are many enemies of faith. We can be knocked off the rock of our salvation. Our faith can be shown to be temporary, counterfeit, convenient, but not genuine and not saving.

Stay alert for false teachers who lead you away from your safety in Christ alone. Be watchful for false friends who will lead you down the path to unbelief. Stand firm against the world, which tells you the way to salvation is a broad road through a wide door so you can believe and behave like the devil and still go to God in heaven. Ignore the inner voice that cheers your sins and mocks your good works. Fight discouragements and despair that tear against your roots in Christ.

Temporary, counterfeit, or convenient faith that does save is described in the parable Jesus told about the seeds. Here is the relevant portion:

“Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. “The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.” - Luke 8:13-14 NIV

Rest in Christ your righteousness. Grip him strongly. Stay firmly rooted. Focus on Jesus. At the same time, stay alert and fight against anyone or anything that turns you away from Christ. We are in a war. Never forget.
